IPL & BBL
The treatment of pigmentation and discoloration can be achieved by a laser known as IPL (Intense Pulsed Laser) or BBL (Broad Band Light). The treatment of age spots, brown spots, freckles, facial veins, or hyperpigmentation is known as a photofacial. Restoring skin to its natural skin tone while encouraging smoother, vibrant, more youthful skin are added benefits. This is the same laser that is used for laser hair removal.
The Treatment
Photothermal energy penetrates heat into the skin to penetrates into the dermis. A filter is placed into the laser to target brown, red, yellow, or green pigments. This causes the laser to activate only certain cell types. Gel is placed thick on the skin to gently treat the skin without burning. A burst of light is administered and slight discomfort follows. Many patients describe the pain as a rubber band snap and then no pain should be experienced after the light burst finishes. The absorption of heat from the laser stimulates collagen production. The number of treatments varies from patient to patient with the average being 4 spaced 1 month apart.
You may experience redness with a wind burn like sensation for 15 minutes post-procedure. Treated blemishes may become dark or more purple 1 to 3 days after treatment. The average treatment has no downtime and 3 to 4 days of sloughing can be expected before dark pigmentation goes away. Side effects include blistering, redness, sensitivity, and pain. Normally these side effects are directly correlated with the laser technician. Dr. Debra Atkins has almost 20 years of training with these laser and extensive knowledge in proper protocols.
